The Closing of Crozer Chester Medical Center and Taylor Hospital

The Delaware County Black Caucus is gravely concerned about the announced closures of Crozer Chester Medical Center in Upland and Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park. Prospect Medical Holdings’ decision threatens to strip vital healthcare services and economic stability from thousands of Delaware County residents—disproportionately harming the African American community.
According to the 2020 Census, the municipalities of Chester, Chester Township, Darby, East Lansdowne, Lansdowne, and Yeadon all have majority‐African American populations. Residents in these areas already face persistent barriers to quality care; losing two major hospitals will create an unprecedented healthcare crisis, forcing vulnerable families to travel farther for emergency and specialty services—or to go without them altogether.
The impact extends beyond patients. More than 2,600 Crozer Health employees now confront sudden job loss and economic uncertainty in an already fragile labor market. Their livelihoods—and the local businesses that rely on their spending—are at stake.
The Delaware County Black Caucus, through its Health and Welfare Committee, pledges to:
Investigate every available legal, legislative, and community remedy to prevent or mitigate these closures.
Collaborate with local, state, and federal partners to secure alternative healthcare options should the shutdowns proceed.
Inform and mobilize affected residents and workers through town‐halls, resource guides, and coordinated advocacy.
Call for Prospect Medical Holdings to be held accountable for the disruptive consequences of its decision and impact to our community.
We stand with elected officials, healthcare regulators, labor leaders, and concerned citizens to join us in safeguarding equitable healthcare access and protecting the economic well‐being of Delaware County’s African American families.
